Board of Elders (Session)

 

Elders are very important in the Presbyterian tradition. In fact, the word “presbyterian” comes from the Greek word for “elder” which is presbuteros. We believe the office of elder has its roots in both the Old And New Testaments. The ministry of elder in the Bible is largely one of government.

According to our Book of Order (part of our constitution): “Elders are chosen by the people. Together with ministers of the Word and Sacrament, they exercise leadership, government, and discipline and have responsibilities for the life of a particular church…”(G-6.0302). In other words, elders and ministers together govern Northminster Presbyterian Church. The authority in our church does not rest with the pastors alone but with elders who are elected by the congregation. Elders and ministers together make up the “session” of a local presbyterian church. The session governs Northminster Presbyterian Church.
