Acts 2:42-47 tells us that the first believers met daily in the Temple for worship. It also tells us that “they broke bread together in their homes.” They met in small groups to share their faith and to pray for and encourage one another.
The church in its fullest expression exists to transform people. Small groups, therefore, as the smallest form of the church, are focused on transforming people, young and old, both lifelong believers and new Christians, into fully devoted followers of Jesus Christ.
What Are Small Groups?
Small Groups at Northminster are groups of 8-12 people who share a common interest, affinity, or life-situation. They run the gamut from “traditional” Bible Study groups to groups whose primary focus is Christian fellowship. Many of our small groups are formed out of the Great Banquet experience.
When Do Small Groups Meet?
Some groups meet from September to June, following the school schedule. Many meet year round with brief breaks throughout the year to accommodate special events and vacation schedules. Some groups meet weekly, some twice and month, and others meet monthly. Each group decides when and how often it will meet based on the needs and desires of those involved.
Where Do The Groups Meet?
Most groups meet in people’s homes since there is limited space available for meetings at the church. Also, home-based meetings more closely resemble the groups in the early church. In addition to this, they provide a less threatening setting for people who would not otherwise visit a church on Sunday morning.
