Board of Deacons

The office of Deacon is the oldest in the Christian church, older than Elder, and older than Pastor. It was the first office established by the apostolic church in Jerusalem. The sixth chapter of Acts tells how the Apostles lead the process to ordain the first Deacons.

The Presbyterian Book of Order states that: "The office of deacon as set forth in Scripture is one of sympathy, witness, and service after the example of Jesus Christ. Persons of spiritual character, honest repute, of exemplary lives, brotherly and sisterly love, warm sympathies, and sound judgment should be chosen for this office.

Northminster's current board of Deacons sincerely looks forward to serving the needs of the Northminster Church family.

It is the duty of Deacons, first of all, to minister to those who are in need, to the sick, to the friendless and to any who may be in distress. They shall assume such other duties as may be delegated to them from time to time by the Session."

In keeping with these traditions and the mission of Northminster Presbyterian Church, which is to reach out and embrace others with God's Love. The mission of Northminster's Board of Deacons is to provide sympathy and service after the example of Jesus Christ. By leading the congregation in ministry, Deacons provide care and support to church membership, church leadership, the community, and to fellow Deacons.

In order to achieve our mission, to fulfill our responsibilities as set forth in the book of order and to meet the needs of our congregation, we are actively involved in many activities. These include regular visits to shut-ins, hospital visits, visits to members during times of illness, death or birth, arranging transportation to church for those in need and providing regular contact with new and inactive members to assist their assimilation into the church family. Deacons also participate in our Worship Services by assisting with Communion, Ushering, and reading Scripture.

If you have a need, which we can fulfill, or if you know of someone who needs our help, please call on us. You can either contact the church office (and we will be notified), or you can personally call one of us.

We would also like to acknowledge the service of all our past deacons who, like the current deacons, have dedicated their time, talent, and treasure to the betterment of the congregation.
