The Christmas story itself is not without its own back-stories. Long before Caesar Augustus issued his decree, before the shepherds were watching over their flocks by night, before angels declared their “Behold!” the Christmas story was already in the works. “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.” He was in the beginning! Before Jesus arrived to save the world, the world received a redeemer type in Moses. Before Jesus declared that the kingdom of God was at hand, a promise was given to his forefather King David that a descendent would sit eternally on David’s throne. Before Jesus called us the light of the world, the prophet Isaiah anticipated the victory of Christ’s light over all of darkness. Christmas is old. It’s older than Jesus. It’s older than the Old Testament. Christmas is older than the forces that make us old.
